Thailand Prepares Major Tourism Surge with Chinese New Year Celebrations and Over One Billion Dollars in Expected Revenue
National festivities and strong visitor projections position Thailand for a substantial economic boost during the Chinese New Year period
Thailand is anticipating a significant surge in tourism and economic activity during the Chinese New Year festival in 2026, as the government and tourism authorities prepare nationwide celebrations designed to attract visitors from across Asia and beyond.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand forecasts that the festive period, running from February thirteenth to February twenty-second, will generate an estimated 42.23 billion baht in revenue — equivalent to more than one billion U.S. dollars — marking a roughly thirteen percent increase compared with the same period last year.
The projection reflects strong international and domestic travel demand, with approximately 1.25 million international tourists and 2.3 million Thai travellers expected to explore cities, cultural sites, and festive events throughout the country.
This growth is underpinned by a rebound in arrivals from China, which has emerged as Thailand’s largest international market of late, with daily visitor numbers in the mid-teens of thousands.
Tourism officials attribute this momentum to concerted marketing strategies, enhanced collaboration with travel agents abroad, and an overall improvement in the destination’s global image.
The Chinese New Year period has long been a high-spending season that drives family reunions, retail consumption and cultural tourism, and this year’s festivities are being celebrated against the backdrop of expanding aviation links and promotional campaigns targeting emerging markets.
Events and displays spanning from Bangkok’s historic Chinatown to major regional hubs are expected to amplify the appeal for both foreign tourists and domestic holidaymakers, while contributing to broader economic recovery objectives.
Officials emphasise that the anticipated tourism boost will help support local businesses and communities nationwide, reinforcing Thailand’s status as a premier cultural and leisure destination in Southeast Asia.
