Thailand's Soft Power: Boosting Tourism Through Filming Locations
Interest in Koh Samui surged due to Netflix's ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 filming on the island, attracting tourists from countries including Israel and India. Filming locations boost Thai tourism, with other sites like Ayutthaya, Lopburi, and Khao Phanom Bencha also drawing visitors due to popular films and series. This approach aims to make Thailand's scenic spots top tourist attractions, increasing national income.
Interest in Koh Samui has surged by 26% in overseas searches and 8% in domestic searches, largely due to the filming of Netflix’s ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 on the island.
Tourists from Israel, India, Germany, South Korea, and Malaysia showed the greatest interest, followed by those from Singapore, Japan, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States.
The series, starring Patrick Schwarzenegger and Lalisa Manoban, was shot at Four Seasons Koh Samui.
Thailand's strategy of using filming locations as a tourism soft power extends beyond Koh Samui.
Popular Thai series and international movies like 'Love Destiny' series and 'Jurassic World 4' have also promoted various locations like Ayutthaya, Lopburi, Khao Phanom Bencha National Park, Krabi, Trang, Phang Nga, and Phuket.
This strategy leverages the inspirational pull of entertainment and media to attract tourists, potentially making these locations top tourist attractions and boosting the country's income.
