Thailand Targets More Than $1.3 Billion in Tourism Revenue With Chinese New Year Festival
‘Amazing Thailand Chinese New Year 2026’ set to draw record visitors and strengthen bilateral cultural ties during peak travel period
Thailand is preparing for an expansive Chinese New Year tourism campaign that aims to generate around US $1.33 billion in revenue during the peak Spring Festival travel period, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) announced in Bangkok.
The “Amazing Thailand Chinese New Year 2026” initiative coincides with the Year of the Horse and the 51st anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and China, and is designed to reinforce the kingdom’s position as a premier destination for festival celebrations outside mainland China.
Under the programme, which runs from February 13 to 22, Thailand is expected to welcome roughly 1.25 million international visitors — a rise of about ten percent year-on-year — along with an estimated 2.3 million domestic trips, up three percent from the same period last year.
Combined tourism revenue during this travel period is projected at roughly 42.23 billion baht, equivalent to approximately US $1.33 billion, marking a thirteen percent increase from last year’s Spring Festival figures.
Flagship celebrations will take place in Bangkok and Hat Yai, with additional festivities in provinces such as Nakhon Sawan and Suphan Buri that highlight regional Thai-Chinese heritage.
Bangkok’s Chinatown district will be illuminated with large-scale installations under the theme “Ride the Fortune, Share the Future,” while cultural performances, lantern exhibits and craft workshops will feature throughout the festival period.
In Hat Yai, street performances, traditional lion dances and nighttime light displays are set to attract both regional and cross-border travellers.
TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool noted that the campaign reflects more than two decades of cooperation between Thai and Chinese tourism authorities, underscoring shared cultural heritage as a driver of sustainable travel and long-term growth.
The initiative also aligns with Thailand’s broader strategy to shift from quantity-focused tourism to quality-led experiences, including premium cultural offerings and enhanced infrastructure for visitors, under the “Thailand Tourism Next” plan.
To enhance visitor safety and satisfaction, the Thai Tourist Police Bureau will provide language support and special service vans at key destinations including Phuket, Chiang Mai and Hat Yai, ensuring international tourists receive assistance throughout their stay.
The combined efforts of public and private partners, including major shopping centres and cultural institutions, aim to distribute tourism benefits nationwide and create memorable experiences for travellers during one of Asia’s most significant holiday seasons.
