Airports of Thailand Ensure Safety Following Myanmar Earthquake
Airports of Thailand Plc confirms structural safety of its facilities after recent tremors.
Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT) has assured the public about the safety of its six international airports following a significant earthquake in Myanmar that was felt in Bangkok and other parts of Thailand on Friday.
The earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 7.7, prompted extensive inspections of the airports' structures and aviation infrastructure.
AOT confirmed that operations resumed at approximately 2:30 PM on the same day after a thorough assessment determined that all facilities, including Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai, Phuket, and Hat Yai airports, were structurally sound.
AOT President Kerati Kijmanawat communicated the findings in a letter sent to the permanent secretary for foreign affairs, confirming that all safety protocols had been completed and that the airports met aviation safety, security, and international service quality standards.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) also reported that all flights in and out of Bangkok were operating normally shortly after the earthquake event.
In related developments, the Expressway Authority of Thailand revealed plans for new tollways in Phuket and Koh Samui aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing road safety.
The Phuket expressway project, spanning 35 kilometers, is intended to reduce accidents and improve travel efficiency on the island, with an expected completion date of 2030. Concurrently, an elevated road connecting mainland Surat Thani to Koh Samui is projected to begin construction in 2029, aimed at relieving heavy holiday traffic.
Furthermore, Bangkok Airways is anticipating a post-pandemic high of 4.7 million passengers this year, bolstered by increased tourism interest due to the filming of HBO’s 'The White Lotus' series in Thailand, particularly in Samui.
The airline has noted a 14% increase in advance bookings and is set to operate 48,077 flights this year.
Plans are underway for airport renovations and expansions, reflecting the airline's commitment to enhancing travel experiences while adapting to the evolving demands of recovery in the aviation sector.
