Thailand Approves 200 Billion Baht in Investments for Bangkok Metro Expansion and Data Centers

Major projects include the Orange Line metro extension and significant data center developments to bolster economic growth.
Thailand's Board of Investment (BOI) has approved investment applications totaling approximately 200 billion baht (5.9 billion USD), encompassing significant infrastructure and technology projects aimed at stimulating economic growth.

The largest approved project is Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Company's 109 billion baht investment in the Orange Line metro extension.

This project aims to connect Bangkok's western and eastern suburbs, stretching from Bang Khunnon to Min Buri, thereby enhancing the city's public transportation network.

In addition to the metro expansion, the BOI has sanctioned three substantial data center and cloud services projects.

Notably, China's Beijing Haoyang Cloud Data Technology Company plans to invest 72.7 billion baht in a facility with an information technology load capacity of 300 megawatts in Rayong province.

This development aligns with Thailand's strategy to strengthen its digital infrastructure and competitiveness in the region.

The BOI has also revised incentives to promote investment in the healthcare sector.

Companies entering joint ventures with government agencies to construct hospitals with at least 91 beds for overnight patients are now eligible for extended income-tax holidays.

This policy adjustment aims to enhance the country's healthcare infrastructure and services.

These approved investments are part of Thailand's broader efforts to boost economic growth, targeting an increase to 3.5% in 2025 from 2.5% in 2024. The government is focusing on enhancing exports, tourism, and investment to achieve this goal.

In 2024, investment applications surged by 35% year-on-year to 1.14 trillion baht (approximately 33 billion USD), the highest in about a decade, driven largely by foreign firms' projects in the digital sector.
