Thailand's Border Measures Lead to Significant Drop in Scam-Related Losses
Government actions result in a 200 million baht reduction in reported scam losses.
Thailand's Digital Economy and Society Minister, Prasert Jantararuangtong, announced a substantial decrease in losses from call scams, amounting to a reduction of at least 200 million baht.
This follows the government's decision to cut power, internet, and fuel supplies to specific border areas in Myanmar suspected of hosting scam operations, effective from February 5, 2025. Since implementing these measures, reported cybercrime cases have declined by over 20%.
Between February 5 and March 17, 2025, a total of 25,487 cases were reported, compared to 31,159 cases from January 1 to 31, 2025, prior to the enforcement of the new measures.
Complaints specifically related to call scams have seen a 67% decrease, with daily filings dropping from over 1,000 cases before the cut-off to significantly lower numbers thereafter.
The Anti-Online Crime Centre reported that damages reported through its 1441 Hotline in February were 200 million baht less than in January, reflecting a reduction of approximately 30%.
These developments align with Thailand's broader efforts to combat cybercrime.
The government has blocked over 80,000 illegal online platforms between October 2024 and February 2025, averaging 16,133 blocks per month.
Additionally, a new law aimed at enhancing the prevention and suppression of cybercrime came into effect in February 2025, updating previous legislation to address the evolving digital landscape and associated criminal activities.
