BMA Ordered to Pay B672m in Lease Fees for Chatuchak Market
The State Railway Workers' Union of Thailand has demanded that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration settle a debt of six hundred seventy-two million baht in overdue leasing fees for Chatuchak Market from 2018 to 2022. Despite a court ruling and various negotiations, the Bangkok administration has yet to fulfill its payment obligations. The State Railway of Thailand may repossess the land if the issues remain unresolved.
The State Railway Workers' Union of Thailand has demanded that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) settle a debt of 672 million baht in overdue leasing fees for Chatuchak Market, spanning from 2018 to 2022.
According to Sarawut Saranwong, the union's chairman, a petition was filed with Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt regarding unpaid fees to the State Railway of Thailand (SRT).
Following a 2018 cabinet resolution, the BMA was required to pay around 169 million baht annually to manage the market, with the lease reviewed every three years.
Despite a legal obligation, the BMA has not signed the contract, leading the SRT to file a civil lawsuit.
A 2022 Civil Court ruling ordered the BMA to pay the overdue fees in monthly instalments starting from July 2022.
The BMA has submitted proposals for debt restructuring and fee reductions but remains committed to following the legal process.
