CPRAM Advances Sustainable Blue Crab Initiative into Its 13th Year
The longstanding partnership aimed at food security in Thailand expands efforts to rehabilitate blue crab populations in collaboration with local authorities and fisheries.
CPRAM Co., Ltd., a leader in the ready-to-eat food industry in Thailand, continues its mission to enhance food security through the 'Sustainable Blue Crab Project', now in its 13th year.
This initiative is being realized in collaborative efforts with the Surat Thani Province, the Department of Fisheries, and various local stakeholders, including the Coastal Aquaculture Research and Development Center 3 in Surat Thani, Viyakrab Products Co., Ltd., conservation groups, and local fishermen from Phumriang, Chaiya District.
The most recent activity involved the release of over 1.6 million young blue crabs into the Thai waters, contributing to the marine ecosystem's health and balance while boosting local food security.
The initiative is reflective of Thailand's commitment to sustainable food practices.
The event was graced by Theerut Supawiboonpol, the Governor of Surat Thani, who underscored the importance of sustainable crab population levels in the region.
Governor Theerut highlighted the region's natural resources, noting the abundant seagrass essential for the young blue crabs' growth, as well as optimal salinity levels and geographical conditions that favor the nurturing of marine life.
The release of young crabs, capable of achieving a survival rate of 90-100%, is supported through academic collaboration with the Department of Fisheries to ensure effective breeding and farming practices.
Wiset Wichitwinyu, Managing Director of CPRAM, reported that over the past 13 years, the project has consistently contributed to increasing blue crab populations in Thai waters.
The initiative aligns with CPRAM's broader food security strategy, encompassing food safety, security, and sustainability under the Food 3S framework.
This encompasses the entire supply chain from local fishermen and raw material providers to consumers and regulatory bodies.
The Sustainable Blue Crab Project has also played a pivotal role in raising social awareness regarding natural resources and environmental sustainability, aiming for an increase in blue crab populations while maintaining the ecological balance of Thailand's marine environment.
This long-term initiative emerges from the goal to enhance blue crab numbers sustainably, preserving natural resources for future generations while creating ongoing value for the community within and outside the organization, in line with Charoen Pokphand Group's philosophy of benefiting the nation and the people.
