Emergence of Hainan Durian Poses Challenge to Thai Durian Market
China has successfully begun producing Hainan durian, creating new competition for Thai growers. Hainan durians have reached the market with limited supply, keeping prices high. Thai durians still dominate due to superior quality, accounting for 65.65% of China's imported durian market.
The Thailand Office of Trade Promotion in Xiamen, China, has reported significant progress in the Chinese durian industry with the successful cultivation of Hainan durian.
Thai durian growers and exporters are advised to enhance the quality and freshness of their produce to maintain their market position.
China has started growing durians extensively in Hainan, including areas like Sanya and Yucai, with the first batch expected by late June 2024.
Approximately 500 trees have begun yielding fruit this season, with peak harvest anticipated in July.
Though the cultivation is successful, challenges like limited production capacity and unpredictable weather remain.
Hainan durian, being grown for four years, is entering the market at around 60 yuan per jin, while Thai durians retail at 30-35 yuan per jin.
Despite the competition, Thai durians are favored for their superior taste and texture.
From January to April 2024, China imported the highest quantity of fresh durians from Thailand, accounting for 65.65% of the market share, though this is a 48.71% decline.
Vietnam and the Philippines follow as major suppliers.
Thai exporters are encouraged to improve and adapt to sustain their market edge.
