Volcanic Eruption in Flores Claims Lives and Causes Mass Evacuation
Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki on the island of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, erupted multiple times on Friday, sending ash plumes up to 10 kilometers into the sky.
This follows a significant eruption on Sunday night, which resulted in the deaths of nine individuals.
The eruptions have damaged over 2,000 homes and forced around 6,000 of the 16,000 residents in nearby areas to evacuate.
Abdul Muhari from Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency described the eruptions as significant, citing extensive ash and sand deposition in surrounding regions.
Hadi Wijaya of the volcanology agency reported that Friday's eruption reached heights of 8 to 10 kilometers, releasing ash and hot gas in all directions.
Evacuation efforts are underway, with adequate supplies of food and masks for the displaced.
The incident highlights Indonesia's position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", known for high seismic activity.
