Fake Doctor in Uttar Pradesh Accused of Killing Woman After Performing YouTube-Based Surgery

Police in Barabanki launch manhunt after a 25-year-old woman dies during an illicit gallbladder operation performed by an unlicensed practitioner.
A tragic case in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh has drawn national attention after a twenty-five-year-old woman from Barabanki died following a surgical procedure allegedly performed by a man posing as a doctor.

According to police statements and local reporting, the suspect, identified as forty-eight-year-old Gyan Prakash Mishra, claimed the woman required urgent gallbladder surgery, then carried out the procedure alone after allegedly studying a YouTube tutorial.

Her family told investigators that no licensed medical professionals were present, the clinic was unregistered, and the man held no formal medical training.

During the attempted surgery, the woman reportedly sustained severe internal injuries, including cuts to blood vessels and portions of the digestive tract, rather than the extraction of gallstones Mishra had promised.

Her condition deteriorated rapidly, and she was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Authorities stated that once confronted with her worsening state, the suspect allegedly locked the clinic and fled with his nephew, who had assisted him.

Police have opened a criminal case on charges including causing death by negligence, and a manhunt is underway for both individuals.

Health officials confirmed that the facility was operating without registration and that Mishra possessed no medical qualifications.

The incident has intensified scrutiny of rural medical settings where unlicensed practitioners continue to operate amid shortages of certified physicians.

Public health researchers note that the proliferation of illegal clinics remains a longstanding structural problem in several Indian states, where economic pressures and limited access to regulated care often enable untrained individuals to provide dangerous medical services.

Similar incidents have been documented in recent years, including other cases in which self-taught operators attempted surgeries after viewing online videos.

For the victim’s family, the loss is devastating, and they are calling for firm action to prevent further tragedies emerging from unregulated healthcare environments.
