How AI is reshaping the global telecom industry - and Thailand
Sharad Mehrotra of True Corporation, fresh from the Mobile World Congress 2024, discusses AI's transformative impact on global telecom and its potential in Thailand.
At this year's event focused heavily on AI, Microsoft introduced AI governance principles and a partnership to enhance developer access to AI models.
True Corporation announced its ethical AI charter, launching an AI governance committee to oversee AI projects and support data privacy.
The industry also examined AI’s environmental impact, with the GSMA showing a drop in carbon emissions from mobile operators despite increasing internet traffic. True Corporation presented its AI solution that reduces network energy usage by 15%, aiding in its goal of carbon neutrality by 2030.
Businesses are urged to assess their readiness before adopting AI, with necessary digital maturity and data governance. True Corporation has committed to training 2,400 digital citizens by 2024 and has set specific goals like automating tasks by 2027.
They're boosting Thai businesses by providing an AI-ready ecosystem, which includes open APIs and digital business training.
Meanwhile, infrastructure discussions have pivoted from 5G to data centers' processing capabilities. Thailand, with investment commitments from tech giants, strives to be a regional AI and data leader.
However, it still trails behind in data center investments and clean energy sources. Telenor's collaboration with NVIDIA is set to develop AI use cases, starting in Norway.
True Corporation has launched its Business and Network Intelligence Center utilizing AI to improve network services and energy efficiency for its 50 million users, aligning with the broader shift towards integrating telecom and technology with sustainable AI solutions.
