Marc Marquez Triumphs Over Brother Alex at Thailand Grand Prix
In a thrilling season opener for MotoGP, Marc Marquez secures victory ahead of his sibling Alex in Buriram.
BURIRAM, Thailand: Marc Marquez, a six-time MotoGP champion, achieved a remarkable victory at the season-opening Thailand Grand Prix held at the Chang International Circuit on March 2, 2025. Competing for the factory Ducati team, he secured a remarkable double by finishing ahead of his younger brother, Alex Marquez, who qualified second on the grid.
Starting from pole position after a successful sprint on Saturday, Marc Marquez made a strong beginning in the humid conditions of Buriram.
However, it was Alex who took the lead on the seventh of the 26 laps, displaying impressive racing skills.
Marc retook the lead with only three laps remaining, ultimately finishing the race 1.732 seconds ahead of his brother.
This victory marked Marc's first win at the opening round of the MotoGP season since 2014, further consolidating his status in the sport.
Francesco Bagnaia, the reigning world champion and Marc's Ducati teammate, completed the all-Ducati podium by finishing in third place.
Marc's success at the Thailand Grand Prix increased his points lead in the MotoGP championship standings, bringing his total to 37 points—eight points clear of Alex in second place and 14 points ahead of Bagnaia.
In a post-race interview, Marc expressed his joy, stating, "Yesterday, I was happy.
Today, I'm super happy.
This is a dream start in my new journey with Ducati in Thailand, where I won my last four championships, and to be here with my brother is incredible."
Alex Marquez acknowledged the challenges he faced during the race, particularly in tire management.
He stated, "I thought he (Marc) was trying not to use a lot of rear tire.
I was using everything, and when you don’t have it, you need to push a bit more.
But in the end, second was our maximum target today."
Bagnaia also commented on his strategy during the race, indicating that he was unable to maintain close proximity to the leading pair.
"I gave my all, but I could not be too close to Alex.
Marc was strong throughout the race," he said.
Franco Morbidelli finished fourth after making up two places during the race, while Japanese rookie Ai Ogura impressed with a fifth-place finish, marking a notable start to his MotoGP career.
