Legislation Approaches Completion Amid National Discussions
The special committee examining the new Alcoholic Beverage Control Bill, led by Wisarn Techathirawat, announced that the draft is about 80% complete and will be presented to the Thai parliament in mid-December 2024.
The draft unifies five versions from various entities, including the government cabinet and academic experts in alcohol prevention.
One significant amendment decentralizes power, granting provincial committees more authority over zoning and regulations.
The bill's emphasis includes strict controls on sales promotions and enhanced penalties, especially relating to minors and intoxicated individuals.
The legislation aims to decrease alcohol-related health risks and traffic accidents, with broader participation from youth councils and provincial authorities.
If finalized, the bill is expected to be enacted by January, following prioritization in parliament.
The draft will be submitted to the House by December 11, ahead of the new parliamentary session starting December 13.
