Thai Campaign Pushes for Anti-Discrimination Reforms
Civil society groups propose measures to combat discrimination in Thailand
Thai civil society organizations have launched a campaign with five proposed reforms aimed at combating discrimination against vulnerable groups in Thailand.
The campaign was highlighted at the 'Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers' event in Bangkok's TK Palace Convention Centre, attended by representatives from 80 civil groups.
The event, organized by the Foundation for Action on Inclusion Rights (FAIR), People's Movement to Eliminate Discrimination (MovED), and Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth), emphasized unity in urging legal changes for a fairer society.
The first recommendation is to enhance knowledge of diversity, ensuring healthcare providers are prepared to handle various issues, including sexual health, prisoners' healthcare, safe abortions, and mental health.
The second proposal calls for standardized and accessible healthcare for all, with providers informing patients of benefits under universal health coverage, supported by more interpreters and compensation for mistreated individuals.
Thirdly, the groups advocate for increased funding and innovation to promote equality.
The fourth recommendation calls for community involvement in governmental checks and balances, while the final proposal urges the government to endorse a new Anti-Discrimination Bill and revise current laws to ensure fair healthcare access for everyone.
