Government initiative to proactively address issues affecting Buddhist practices
On November 27, 2024, the Thai government announced a proactive strategy to protect Buddhism by identifying and addressing problems early, rather than reacting to them after they arise.
Chousak Sirinil, a minister within the Prime Minister's Office overseeing the National Office of Buddhism, outlined several key measures.
These include increased enforcement against illegal activities such as drug use and gambling on temple grounds and stricter action against behaviors that contradict Buddhist teachings, such as monks engaging in sexual activities or misusing online platforms.
Measures to counteract the spread of distorted Buddhist teachings will be intensified, and impersonation of monks will attract severe legal consequences.
Additionally, there will be a tighter vetting process for individuals wishing to enter the monkhood.
A new center for complaint reception and public participation in Buddhist protection efforts will be established, along with a committee to address land disputes involving temples, monasteries, and state entities.
