True Corporation Completes Nationwide Cell Broadcast Service for Emergency Alerts in Thailand
True Corporation becomes the first private operator in Thailand to fully install the Cell Broadcast Service for disaster warnings, ensuring nationwide readiness ahead of the deadline.
True Corporation has successfully completed the nationwide installation of the Cell Broadcast Service (CBS) disaster warning system, marking its status as the first private telecommunications operator in Thailand to do so.
This achievement comes ahead of the original deadline in May, following a directive from the Prime Minister and a recent earthquake that underscored the necessity of such measures for public safety.
The CBS facilitates the swift dissemination of emergency alerts utilizing 4G and 5G networks, transmitting messages directly to mobile devices located within affected areas.
The alerts are designed to be sent as sound notifications and pop-up messages that can be received even when devices are in sleep or standby mode, with no need for users to download specific applications.
The system is capable of delivering alerts in five languages: Thai, English, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian.
All essential CBS functions are now operational across True's comprehensive network, covering System & Configuration Management, Message Deployment Function, and Network Management.
True is fully prepared to communicate alerts to users on both True and dtac SIM cards once the government issues an official command, affording timely warnings aimed at protecting lives and property.
Chakkrit Urairat, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at True Corporation Plc., remarked on the importance of effective emergency alerts, stating the recent earthquake dynamics exemplified the critical need for immediate information dissemination in safeguarding lives.
True's completion of full CBS integration illustrates its commitment to enhancing public safety and readiness.
The Cell Broadcast Service system is a joint initiative spearheaded by the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) in collaboration with the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), backed by the Office of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) funded through the Universal Basic Telecommunications and Social Services Fund (USO).
Preliminary system tests were carried out in various locations over the past year, including True Corporation’s headquarters in Bangkok and in Phuket, a region recognized for its vulnerability to disasters and popularity among tourists.
Under the CBS framework, the DDPM serves as the central command unit, responsible for the creation and management of alert content, acting as the Cell Broadcast Entity (CBE) tasked with content development, approval, and specifying affected areas.
Telecom operators like True operate as Cell Broadcast Centres (CBCs), ensuring the distribution of pre-approved messages through designated cell towers throughout the country.
