Global Electric Vehicle Count Projected to Reach 85 Million by 2025
Growth in EV Adoption Driven by China and Europe
According to Jonathan Davenport, a senior analyst at Gartner, the number of electric vehicles (EVs) on the road worldwide is expected to reach 85 million by 2025, despite recent challenges in the market.
In 2024, the EV count is projected to be 64 million, with a 33% increase anticipated the following year.
The growth will be fueled largely by higher sales in China, accounting for 58% of the increase, and Europe, contributing 24%.
Together, these regions are expected to make up 82% of the global EV population.
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are projected to rise 35% to nearly 62 million units by 2025, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are expected to grow by 28% to 23 million units.
In Thailand, electric vehicles are estimated to number over 77,800 by 2025, representing a 49% uptick from 2024, with BEVs making up 74% of this total.
China is anticipated to maintain its lead in EV ownership compared to the rest of the world through 2025 and beyond, while Europe and North America are predicted to account for 36% of global EVs in 2024.
