Karen Rebels Announce Deadline for Chinese Nationals Operating in Myanmar

The Democratic Karen Buddhist Army demands the removal of Chinese gangsters amidst crackdowns on fuel smuggling and illegal businesses in Kayin state.
The Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) issued an ultimatum on Sunday to Chinese nationals engaged in illicit activities, instructing them to vacate all areas under DKBA control by the end of February.

This announcement comes in response to reports of illegal online scam operations and other unlicensed businesses being run by Chinese nationals, particularly in Phayathonezu township, Kayin state, Myanmar.

Colonel Saw A Wan of the DKBA stated that individuals involved in illegal gambling, casinos, and other scams must leave the township by the specified date, warning that those who do not comply will face legal repercussions.

The ultimatum follows recent actions by the Thai government, which has cut off the supply of electricity, petrol, diesel, and internet signals to Phayathonezu and four other border locations in Myanmar.

The DKBA aims to foster trust with Thai authorities in hopes of having the utility services restored.

The group underscored its commitment to policing its territory, emphasizing increased patrols to prevent unauthorized entry by Chinese nationals.

The crackdown on fuel smuggling has intensified, as Thai authorities address the ongoing issue stemming from the ban on these essential supplies to Myanmar.

Reports indicate that while certain areas have plunged into darkness due to the supply cut, some businesses operating illegal online scams have maintained power thanks to backup generators.

In a related enforcement action, police in Sangkhla Buri district confirmed the arrest of a Thai national identified as Samrit, who was caught attempting to smuggle 290 liters of diesel into Phayathonezu.

The fuel, stored in ten containers within his pickup truck, was seized during a routine inspection.

According to authorities, Samrit admitted to smuggling the diesel for a customer in the Myanmar township.

As the situation evolves, both the DKBA and Thai authorities continue to navigate the complexities of border security and regional governance in response to illegal activities linked to fuel and online scams.
