In 2023, the student-produced documentary 'The Last Breath of Sam Yan' won the esteemed Suphannahong National Film Award for Best Documentary in Thailand.
Created by Chulalongkorn University students Settanant Thanakitkoses and Netiwit Chotphatphaisal, the film chronicled efforts to protect the Mazu shrine from demolition.
With limited funds of 200,000 baht raised from working in a local press, the team secured equipment and contributed labor to bring their compelling narrative to life.
Directed by Prempapat Plittapolkranpim, the 75-minute documentary showcased the spiritual and historical significance of the ancient shrine amidst legal controversies with the Property Management of Chulalongkorn University (PMCU).
Despite facing court rulings favoring the PMCU's development plans, the film has increased public interest, enhanced local activism, and engaged a younger audience to support the shrine.
Released in cinemas and on Netflix, the documentary has turned the once-contemplated demolition site into a symbolic space visited by supporters of heritage preservation.
