Thailand to Participate in Seoul's Third Summit for Democracy Online
Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin will join the third Summit for Democracy via online platform from Seoul this Wednesday.
The event focuses on 'Democracy for Future Generations' and includes a virtual plenary session in the evening where Thavisin will give a brief three-minute address alongside leaders from various democracies.
The summit commenced on Monday with discussions on democracy's intersection with technology, and will subsequently explore civil society and youth contributions to democratic development.
In his speech, Thavisin will discuss Thailand's progress towards democracy, notably after the May election last year when his government, comprising multiple political parties, was elected. This shifted Thailand's global image positively, distancing it from its prior military-led governance.
Previously, the United States excluded Thailand from the 2022 and 2023 summits, questioning its democratic status post-2014 military coup. Despite a 2019 general election, Western nations were hesitant to fully recognize Thailand as a democratic entity.
