Former Thai Prime Minister to Propose Adoption of Digital Currencies Amid U.S. Policy Shift
Former Prime Minister of Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra, has announced that he has been tasked with proposing a cryptocurrency strategy for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
This assignment was communicated to him by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is the current chair of ASEAN.
Thaksin disclosed this development during a press interaction on February 8, 2025, in Bangkok.
Thaksin indicated that his interest in cryptocurrencies positioned him as a suitable advisor for this initiative.
He noted the necessity for ASEAN to consider digital currencies, especially in light of recent actions by United States President Donald Trump, who has expressed support for Bitcoin and other digital assets.
President Trump has initiated the formation of a working group aimed at reviewing U.S. cryptocurrency regulations and exploring a national cryptocurrency stockpile.
According to Thaksin, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia are anticipated to be at the forefront of this regional cryptocurrency endeavor.
This initiative was one of the primary topics of discussion during his recent meetings with Prime Minister Anwar in Malaysia on February 2 and 3.
In addition to the cryptocurrency proposal, Thaksin stated that he has been asked to assist in addressing the ongoing political unrest in Myanmar.
Prime Minister Anwar expressed his desire for ASEAN members to maintain stable governance and has tasked Thaksin with engaging various factions involved in the Myanmar political landscape to foster dialogue.
Thaksin also touched on the issue of southern Thailand’s unrest, mentioning that both Thai and Malaysian governments recognize the factors that have hindered past peace efforts in the region, although he did not provide specific details on those factors.
Amid these discussions on political issues, on the same day, a bomb explosion in the Nong Chik district of Pattani province resulted in the death of one police officer and injuries to three others.
The officers were on a routine patrol when the explosion occurred near a petrol station.
One of the injured officers, Pol Cpl Anucha Khwanthong-on, ultimately succumbed to his injuries despite receiving medical treatment at Nong Chik Hospital.
