Two Arrested in AI-Aided Scam Targeting Beauty Queen and Others
Two men arrested for their involvement in a Poipet-based scam operation that used AI to impersonate police officers, tricking victims, including a beauty queen, out of millions.
Two men have been arrested for their involvement in a sophisticated call scam operation based in Poipet, Cambodia, which targeted Thai citizens using artificial intelligence (AI) to impersonate police officers.
The suspects, 31-year-old Ramil Pantawong and 28-year-old Thanawut Kanyaphan, were apprehended in separate locations in Sa Kaeo and Chon Buri provinces, respectively.
The scam gang operated out of a call centre in a multi-storey building in Poipet, where approximately 50 individuals were involved.
The criminals used AI technology to deceive victims, including Thai-British beauty queen Charlotte Austin, who lost four million baht.
The suspects posed as police officers investigating money laundering and narcotics cases, coercing victims into transferring large sums of money for 'examination'.
The gang is reported to have swindled 163 individuals before the arrests were made.
The operation is believed to have been run under the direction of Chinese gang leaders, with scripted dialogues provided to the suspects.
Police officials have confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
