Migrant Workers Face Challenges with New Registration Requirements
Complex Procedures Cause Loss of Legal Status for Many Migrants
Migrant workers in Thailand are experiencing difficulties with the new registration and work permit renewal requirements, resulting in many losing their legal right to work.
An employer group, Nai Chang Si Khao, led by Nilubol Pongpayom, previously petitioned the government for simpler processes but has received no response.
As a result, many missed the October 31 deadline, becoming illegal workers.
The process involves obtaining a Certificate of Identity (CI), which is overly complex, with only seven CI centers nationwide.
Allegations of improper fee handling at these centers have also been reported.
Due to the limited number of centers, workers are required to travel extensively, causing delays.
Another group of workers faces a February 13 deadline, requiring them to return to their home countries to restart the process.
Many workers, including those who have paid taxes and contributed to social security, expressed frustration over losing their legal status due to these cumbersome procedures.
