Thailand Announces Free Expressway Tolls as New Year Gift for 2026
Government to waive tolls on major expressways from December 30 to January 5 to ease holiday travel
The Thai government has unveiled a festive transport relief measure, declaring that tolls on key expressways will be waived for all motorists during the 2026 New Year holiday.
The Ministry of Transport announced that the Burapha Withi Expressway, which links Bangkok to Chonburi and Suvarnabhumi Airport, and the Kanchanaphisek Expressway, which encircles the capital, will be toll-free from early on December 30, 2025, until midnight on January 5, 2026. This exceptional exemption was published in the Royal Gazette on December 16, 2025, following approval by the Expressway Authority of Thailand Board under relevant provisions of the Expressway and Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand Act.
The toll suspension is framed as a New Year’s gift to the public, aimed at facilitating smoother travel for holiday makers, family reunions, and domestic tourism during one of Thailand’s busiest travel periods.
All vehicle classes will be eligible for the toll waiver on the specified corridors throughout the seven-day period.
Motorists are expected to benefit from reduced travel costs and improved congestion management as they head to holiday destinations and return to urban centres after the celebrations.
Officials emphasised that the measure applies exclusively to the Burapha Withi and Kanchanaphisek expressways, and that standard toll charges will resume promptly at the end of the exemption period.
The initiative reflects the government’s broader efforts to support domestic mobility, enhance public satisfaction, and stimulate economic activity during the year-end festive season.
Residents and visitors alike are advised to plan their journeys with awareness of the temporary toll changes and to expect high travel volumes during peak holiday days.
