Bhutan Marks National Day with Strengthened Strategic Partnership with Thailand
Bhutan celebrates its National Day amid growing diplomatic, economic and cultural ties with Thailand
Bhutan observed its National Day on December 17, 2025, commemorating the coronation of the first hereditary monarch, Ugyen Wangchuck, in 1907 and underscoring over a century of national unity and monarchical tradition.
The annual celebration, known as Gyalyong Düchen, is a central national holiday marked by formal addresses, flag-raising ceremonies, processions, cultural performances and community gatherings, reflecting the central role of the monarchy in Bhutanese identity and heritage.
In 2025, the occasion also highlighted the deepening relationship between the Kingdom of Bhutan and the Kingdom of Thailand.
Although diplomatic relations were formally established in 1989, the two constitutional monarchies share a long history of cultural affinity rooted in their common Buddhist traditions and royal values.
As of this year, Thailand stands among the select nations maintaining full diplomatic ties with Bhutan, a testament to the trust and mutual respect cultivated over decades.
Recent developments have added momentum to bilateral engagement.
On April 4, 2025, the two countries signed a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement expected to take effect in January 2026. The agreement is poised to facilitate tariff-free access for Bhutanese goods into the Thai market, expanding economic opportunities and diversifying trade ties beyond the traditional ASEAN landscape.
Thai investors have also expressed interest in Bhutan’s emerging ventures, including sustainable urban development projects that align with shared values of environmental stewardship and modernisation.
Cultural, educational and tourism exchanges continue to bolster people-to-people links.
Several Thai universities have welcomed Bhutanese students under scholarship programmes, while tourism flows between the Himalayan kingdom and Thailand’s varied destinations are anticipated to grow as bilateral frameworks simplify travel and promote mutual interests.
The Bhutan-Thailand Friendship Park in Thimphu, established in 2009, remains a visible symbol of enduring goodwill.
As Bhutan reflects on its past and charts its future, the 2025 National Day celebration served not only as a tribute to national unity and monarchical legacy but also as an affirmation of a robust and expanding partnership with Thailand.
The deepening cooperation across trade, education, culture and tourism underscores a shared commitment to prosperity, sustainability and regional cooperation in the years ahead.
