Historic district launches initiative to be Thailand's first carbon-neutral area
Phuket Old Town has launched the 'Phuket Old Town Carbon Neutrality 2030' initiative, aiming to become Thailand's first carbon-neutral region by 2030.
The initiative was unveiled by Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong at 72nd Anniversary Queen Sirikit Park, supported by local government, the Big Data Institute (BDI), and community leaders.
Developed by the Sustainable Tourism Development Foundation, the project focuses on sustainable tourism through waste reduction, efficient resource management, and community engagement.
Key strategies include waste segregation, smart technology for carbon emission monitoring, and aims to cut carbon dioxide by 30% within three years.
The initiative also marks Phuket's selection as the host for the Global Sustainable Tourism Conference in 2026.
Governor Sophon Suwanrat and Mayor Saroj Angkanapilas highlighted the importance of aligning with global sustainability standards while preserving the area's heritage and tourist appeal.
