Prime Minister Calls for Action Against Domestic Violence
Campaign Aims to End Violence Against Women and Children in Thailand
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has urged public support for the government's campaign to end violence against women and children.
Her call comes during the National Violence Elimination Against Children and Women Month, observed every November since 1999 in alignment with the United Nations' International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25.
The theme for this year's campaign, 'Act Now to End Violence against Women and Girls,' emphasizes raising awareness, empathy, and public knowledge of legal protections against domestic violence.
The Prime Minister highlighted the societal nature of domestic violence, urging people not to treat it as a personal issue and to report cases to authorities such as the police or the Social Assistance Centre 1300 Hotline.
The National Human Rights Commission of Thailand has also called on the government to amend laws to protect victims better and address social identity complexities that may increase vulnerability.
According to the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, approximately 30,000 women report violations of their rights, including physical and emotional abuse, annually in Thailand.
