Thai Army Reports Border Calm but Maintains Vigilance Over Preah Vihear Movements
Thailand’s Second Army Area says the frontier remains stable while monitoring Cambodian troop activities near the disputed Preah Vihear sector
Thailand’s Second Army Area has reported that the border with Cambodia remains largely calm following a cease-fire agreement, but forces under its command continue to closely observe movements near the contested Preah Vihear frontier.
The statement reflects caution after weeks of intense clashes earlier in late 2025, which prompted a renewed truce and diplomatic engagement under ASEAN and external mediation efforts.
The Thai military emphasised that current deployments are defensive in nature, with no offensive operations triggered as both sides maintain their positions under the cease-fire pact that took effect in late December.
The border between the two countries, particularly around the culturally and historically significant Preah Vihear region, has been a longstanding flashpoint.
Although active fighting has ceased under the second cease-fire — brokered on December 27 and upheld for more than seventy-two hours — Thai commanders said they continue to monitor any reported movements or activities by Cambodian forces near disputed terrain to ensure security and stability for communities on both sides of the frontier.
Recent reports from Thai military observers noted the vigilance of reconnaissance units tasked with tracking troop concentrations, patrols and equipment deployments in areas where sovereignty claims overlap.
Observers stress that preserving calm requires strict adherence to cease-fire terms and transparent communication between Bangkok and Phnom Penh through established bilateral mechanisms.
Continued monitoring is expected as diplomatic talks and ASEAN-facilitated dialogue persist as part of efforts to prevent further escalation and lay groundwork for a longer-term resolution of border disagreements.
