Thailand Positions Yachting and Marinas as Key Drivers of Future Tourism Growth
Government and private sector move to expand marina infrastructure and luxury marine tourism to attract high-value visitors and boost the economy
Thailand is accelerating efforts to establish itself as a premier global yachting and marina tourism destination, with public and private investment expanding nautical infrastructure, services, and events.
Government agencies, industry leaders, and international partners are promoting yacht tourism as a high-value segment expected to generate increased foreign spending, diversify the tourism mix, and create new economic opportunities across coastal regions.
Central to the strategy is enhanced marina capacity and marine-related facilities, with Phuket at the forefront.
Investors have been invited to develop a world-class marina at Sapam Bay on Phuket’s east coast that includes berths, retail, hospitality, and leisure infrastructure, supported by pre-approved environmental assessments and licenses.
Officials have emphasised Phuket’s rapid emergence as an Asian boating hub that can attract affluent international tourists and stimulate local economic growth.
Other developments include the ongoing expansion of marina operations with international partners, and plans to expand services in Koh Samui and Pattaya, reflecting the broader vision of a connected network of maritime tourism assets.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand has showcased the nation’s leadership in yacht tourism through regional collaborations with Malaysia and Indonesia as part of the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle initiative, and through participation in major international yacht shows.
The sector currently draws hundreds of yachts annually, with projections to nearly double this figure in the coming years, bolstering revenues for related industries.
High-profile events such as the Thailand International Boat Show continue to draw thousands of visitors and global exhibitors, reinforcing Thailand’s reputation in luxury marine leisure and lifestyle markets.
This momentum aligns with government priorities to attract premium tourists under the “Amazing Thailand Tourism and Sport Year 2025” campaign, with policies and marketing aimed at sustainable, high-yield tourism.
By deepening marina infrastructure, hosting flagship yachting events, and enhancing international cooperation, Thailand is positioning its coastal assets as catalysts for tourism innovation, economic diversification, and enhanced global competitiveness.
