Thailand's DES Ministry Plans Stricter Regulations to Combat Online Scams
Thailand's Digital Economy and Society Ministry plans to amend regulations enforcing liability on banks and telecom operators for negligence in combating online scams. The Digital Economy and Society (DES) Ministry in Thailand is set to amend regulations to hold banks and telecom operators accountable for negligence in tackling online scams.
DES permanent secretary Wisit Wisitsora-At stated that e-government, digital manpower, and digital trust are pivotal for digital transformation.
These themes were highlighted during the '60 years of Excellence: Creating Great Leaders, Designing the Future' seminar organized by the Thailand Management Association (TMA).
The Ministry aims to extend last year's rules to further prevent technological crimes, emphasizing liability for service providers like banks and SIM card operators.
Online scams and gambling are reported to represent up to 45% of Thailand's GDP, accounting for approximately 17-18 trillion baht.
The Ministry has allocated a budget of 200 million baht for fiscal year 2025 to implement the Cloud First policy for a paperless government system.
They predict that 50% of government services will be paperless by 2024.
Additionally, the Ministry is fostering digital manpower through the 'learn to earn' platform to streamline labor market demands.
Efforts are also being made to enhance Thailand's digital competitiveness on a global scale.
