China Launches New Shuttle Diplomacy Push to Help Cambodia and Thailand End Border Clashes
Beijing’s Special Envoy for Asian Affairs travels to Phnom Penh and Bangkok to urge ceasefire and renewed dialogue amid ongoing conflict.
Chinese diplomatic efforts to quell renewed clashes along the Cambodia–Thailand border intensified this week as the Special Envoy for Asian Affairs of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs embarked on a second shuttle-diplomacy mission to Phnom Penh and Bangkok.
The envoy, Deng Xijun, arrived in the region on December 18 with the stated goal of helping both governments reach an immediate ceasefire and resume negotiations to resolve the ongoing territorial dispute through peaceful means.
China’s Foreign Ministry underscored Beijing’s deep concern about the casualties and displacement caused by the skirmishes and reiterated its intention to leverage its position as a close neighbour and friend to both nations to foster de-escalation and constructive dialogue.
During his visit to Cambodia, Deng met with senior political and defence officials, and in Thailand he held talks with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, defence leaders and senior foreign affairs officials to urge restraint, mutual trust and practical steps toward peace.
Both Cambodia and Thailand expressed appreciation for China’s continued engagement and reaffirmed their commitment to achieving a sustainable ceasefire, emphasising their willingness to maintain close communication with Beijing and regional partners in pursuit of reduced tensions at the border.
The latest shuttle diplomacy follows a special meeting of Association of Southeast Asian Nations foreign ministers in Kuala Lumpur aimed at restoring peace after clashes resumed in early December, following the breakdown of a previously agreed ceasefire.
In parallel, commanders from both militaries have begun talks on December 24 to discuss terms for resuming a truce, underscoring the urgent regional push to halt hostilities and address humanitarian impacts.
The conflict has inflicted significant human cost and displacement, intensifying international calls for immediate cessation of violence and peaceful resolution.
