Thai Ministry of Digital Economy and Society Warns Public Against False Visa-Free Entry Claims
Government agency alerts citizens and foreign residents to misinformation about changes to Thailand’s visa-free entry rules
Thailand’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Society has issued an urgent public warning about the spread of false information online alleging new restrictions on visa-free entry for foreign nationals.
The ministry identified social media posts claiming that Thailand has imposed a limit on the number of times a visitor can enter the country without a visa per year.
Officials emphasised that these claims are unfounded and do not reflect current policy.
The warning was released after monitoring by the Anti-Fake News Centre, which is tasked with identifying and addressing disinformation that could affect public understanding or national security.
Ministry spokesman Wetang Puangsup highlighted that the circulation of inaccurate reports can create confusion among travellers and residents alike, particularly at a time when the government is adjusting immigration and visa policy.
Thai authorities have recently been reviewing aspects of the visa-exemption scheme introduced in mid-2024 that allows passport holders from designated countries to enter Thailand for tourism without a visa for up to sixty days, with discussions underway about possible future adjustments aimed at curbing misuse and strengthening border controls.
The ministry reiterated that current rules remain unchanged and urged members of the public, both Thai and foreign, to rely on official government sources for accurate visa and immigration information.
It also discouraged the sharing of unverified social media posts that misrepresent visa-free entry rules or other aspects of immigration policy.
