Thailand Sets Ambitious Target of up to 3 Trillion Baht in Tourism Revenue for 2026
Tourism Authority of Thailand outlines strategic ‘Thailand Tourism Next’ plans to drive growth through niche markets and night economy development
Thailand’s tourism sector is gearing up for a pivotal year in 2026, with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) setting an ambitious revenue target of up to 3 trillion baht under its strategic blueprint known as ‘Thailand Tourism Next’.
The target represents a significant milestone as the country seeks to accelerate recovery from pandemic-era downturns and elevate its position among the world’s leading travel destinations.
TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool outlined the strategy’s key components, which include diversifying market focus, enhancing the night economy, and tapping into niche tourism segments such as wellness travel and unconventional attractions tailored to specific interest groups.
Officials argue that this value-driven approach, which moves beyond pure visitor numbers to emphasise spending quality and experience, will help sustain long-term growth for the industry.
Domestic travel remains a core pillar of the plan, with authorities expecting robust participation from Thai residents to complement international arrivals.
In recent years, domestic tourism contributed significantly to overall receipts, and strategies are now under way to further stimulate local travel demand through targeted promotions and community-based experiences.
Meanwhile, international tourism efforts aim to broaden Thailand’s reach beyond traditional markets by pursuing emerging source countries in Southeast Asia, India and beyond.
Another notable focus of the ‘Thailand Tourism Next’ strategy is the development of Thailand’s night economy, which includes enhancing safety, convenience and entertainment options in urban centres and regional destinations alike.
Niche events, such as themed festivals and cultural experiences, are being promoted to attract travellers with specialised interests, including proposals for novel drawcards like UFO-themed tourism and other unconventional offerings.
Despite ongoing global uncertainties and competition from neighbouring destinations, TAT remains confident that its multi-faceted strategy can deliver the projected revenue growth.
Industry stakeholders view this integrated plan as a bold effort to transform Thailand’s tourism landscape, ensuring resilience, competitiveness and broader economic impact as the sector adapts to evolving traveller preferences and behaviours.
