Laos, Thailand and Malaysia Deepen Regional Energy Cooperation Through Cross-Border Power Integration
New agreement under ASEAN Power Grid initiative enables expanded electricity transmission and reinforces regional energy integration
Laos, Thailand and Malaysia have taken a significant step forward in regional energy cooperation with the signing of a cross-border electricity transmission agreement under the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project.
On January 14 in Bangkok, senior energy executives and government officials formalised Phase 2 of the initiative, which allows electricity generated in Laos to be transmitted through Thailand and Malaysia’s power grids and delivered to Singapore over a two-year period.
Under the agreement, Laos can export up to one hundred megawatts of electricity to Singapore using existing transmission infrastructure, cementing its role as a key regional power supplier and advancing the long-held vision of a more interconnected ASEAN Power Grid.
The Phase 2 agreement represents a concrete advancement of ASEAN’s regional grid integration, which seeks to enhance energy security, optimise resource utilisation and support sustainable economic growth through coordinated electricity trade among member states.
Officials from Electricité du Laos, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand and Malaysia’s Tenaga Nasional Berhad signed the accord, with participation from high-level representatives of their energy ministries.
This development builds on earlier multilateral cooperation in which Laos’s hydropower has already begun flowing to Singapore and sets the stage for future expansion of cross-border power exchanges that underpin the ASEAN Power Grid initiative.
