Mississippi State Expands Veterinary Global Learning With Thailand and Belize Study Abroad Programs
University launches immersive, credit-bearing summer internships for undergraduates in Thailand and Belize to broaden veterinary and cultural competencies
Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine has announced a strategic partnership with educational travel provider Loop Abroad that will create new international study abroad opportunities for undergraduate students pursuing careers in veterinary medicine and related fields.
The collaboration establishes credit-bearing Summer Veterinary Internships designed to immerse students in hands-on veterinary practice and cultural engagement abroad, reflecting the institution’s commitment to global veterinary education and the interconnected principles of One Health.
Starting in summer two thousand twenty-six, students enrolled at any U.S. university will be eligible to participate in two distinct programs: a two-week “Companion Animal and Elephant Veterinary Medicine” course in Thailand, and a three-week “Food Animal, Marine, and Wildlife Medicine in the Tropics” course in Belize.
Both courses combine structured lectures, laboratory work and experiential learning in outdoor and clinical settings, enabling participants to observe and engage with a wide range of animal species while completing academic credit requirements.
The application deadline for these summer internships is February ten, two thousand twenty-six.
The Thailand program offers three academic credit hours and places students in environments where they will concentrate on companion animal care alongside elephant veterinary practices while gaining cultural insight into local communities, traditions and daily life.
In Belize, students will earn four academic credit hours as they explore veterinary care for food animals, marine species and wildlife, combining academic learning with field observations that deepen their understanding of veterinary medicine in tropical ecosystems.
Mississippi State’s College of Veterinary Medicine, founded in nineteen seventy-four, is recognised for its emphasis on experiential learning and rigorous training, where students graduate with extensive practical experience.
The new study abroad internships are designed to complement existing academic pathways by exposing participants to diverse veterinary practices and cultural contexts, enhancing professional development and intercultural competence.
Faculty and leadership from the university’s International Institute Office of Study Abroad will coordinate program support and student participation, underscoring the institution’s land-grant mission to prepare students for impactful careers in a globalised world.
