Suvarnabhumi Airport Enhances Capacity with Third Runway
Bangkok's Airport to Increase Flight Operations by 16%
Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport is set to increase its flight operations by 16% with the addition of a third runway.
Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri announced that this new runway, operational as of October 3, allows handling of up to 94 flights per hour, compared to the previous 68 flights with two runways.
AeroThai, the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Co Ltd, has begun gradually transitioning flights to this new runway.
By year-end, Suvarnabhumi Airport is expected to support approximately 348,980 flights, averaging 950 flights per day.
For 2024, the Transport Ministry aims for 1 million flights nationwide, with a daily average of 1,000 at Suvarnabhumi alone.
Nopasit Chakpitak, president of AeroThai, confirmed no issues have arisen since using the third runway and highlighted its role in improving efficiency during peak congestion.
Initial operations will see 68-75 flights per hour, with plans to increase to 85-94 flights per hour by early next year, further optimizing air traffic patterns to enhance fuel efficiency for airlines and streamline scheduling.
