Thailand Sets Ambitious Carbon Reduction Goals for Events as Part of National Climate Strategy
Bangkok promotes carbon-neutral and low-emission event practices to support Thailand’s broader greenhouse gas reduction commitments
Thailand is intensifying efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of events and gatherings as part of the country’s broader national strategy to tackle climate change and advance towards long-term greenhouse gas reduction targets.
Government entities, industry bodies and private stakeholders are promoting sustainable event practices, carbon offsetting mechanisms and measurement tools to encourage organisers to reduce emissions and contribute to the government’s climate commitments.
Efforts by the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau target significant reductions in carbon emissions from meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions, establishing goals to cut the carbon footprint associated with these events by substantial amounts to support the nation’s decarbonisation agenda.
Event organisers are now exploring carbon-trading platforms to offset emissions through community-based carbon credits, while major venues are adopting real-time carbon tracking dashboards to quantify emissions from activities such as energy use, travel and catering.
These initiatives align with broader objectives under Thailand’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions and its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by mid-century and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065, in harmony with the government’s national climate change mitigation policies.
Officials emphasise that reducing emissions from events not only helps mitigate climate impact but also enhances Thailand’s global competitiveness in sustainable tourism and the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions sector by demonstrating environmental leadership.
The shift towards carbon-neutral events reflects a growing recognition among Thai authorities and industry leaders that sustainability must be integrated across economic activities, reinforcing Thailand’s role in advancing low-carbon development and climate resilience across Southeast Asia.
