AIS and True Corporation Prepare for Upcoming Spectrum Auction
The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) is set to finalize a draft for the auction of three key spectrum bands—850MHz, 2100MHz, and 2300MHz—by June.
True Corporation and AIS, leading mobile operators, are considering this draft as part of their future strategy, despite having enough spectrum to meet current needs for the next two years. Both companies seek to enhance customer services and prepare for 6G advancements.
These spectrums, currently held by National Telecom (NT), will be available as their rights expire in September 2025. True Corporation CEO, Manat Manavutiveth, emphasizes the need for a clear auction plan for adequate preparation to meet growing data demands. He advocates for transparent reallocation conditions before NT's rights lapse.
Manat points out the financial strain operators face from past 4G and 5G auctions, with Thailand's spectrum prices being higher than in other countries. Winning bidders also face obligatory network expansions, which further increase costs.
AIS CEO, Somchai Lertsutiwong, notes his company evaluates auction participation based on acquisition costs, operational improvements, and competitive standing. Although AIS has sufficient spectrum for two more years, they actively monitor the NBTC's auction plans to maintain service innovation.
NBTC Commissioner Somphop Purivigraipong revealed that a spectrum management roadmap, including the 3500MHz band, is forthcoming, with the aim of release by June. Post-expiry plans from NT are requested by the NBTC, and spectrum auction decision impacts must consider future consumer costs.
Two focus groups will discuss the draft before its completion, ensuring the auction occurs before NT's rights end in 2025. Somphop views the 3500MHz band as particularly advantageous for its demand and potential in promoting 5G networks in various industries.
