EU Launches EU-ASEAN Green Diplomacy Weeks 2024 with Jakarta Run Event
Initiative aims to foster climate cooperation and inspire meaningful action across Southeast Asia
The European Union (EU) kicked off the EU-ASEAN Green Diplomacy Weeks 2024 on October 27 with a five-kilometer run titled "EU-ASEAN Green Transition for a Sustainable Planet" in Jakarta. Led by EU Ambassador to ASEAN Sujiro Seam, the event attracted around 500 participants. Ambassador Seam emphasized the EU's commitment to supporting ASEAN member states in their green transitions, aiming to inspire individuals, communities, and organizations to take stronger actions to protect the environment for future generations.
The Green Diplomacy Week is part of a global EU initiative to promote climate cooperation and showcase sustainability initiatives. The campaign includes events across Southeast Asia, encouraging dialogue on topics such as the circular economy, biodiversity, sustainable landscapes, and the impact of climate change on women. Jihan Abdul Rahman, Chargé d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of Brunei Darussalam to ASEAN, highlighted ASEAN's efforts in climate action, including the establishment of the ASEAN Centre for Climate Change to coordinate regional efforts.
ASEAN youth leaders also participated, with advocates like Yulia Ratnasari emphasizing the responsibility to ensure inclusive development that protects coastal communities and biodiversity. The EU, comprising 27 member states with a population of 447 million, plays a significant role in promoting peace, democracy, and sustainable development globally.
