Most Bangkokians more comfortable with previous bus numbering system
A Nida Poll survey showed the majority of Bangkok residents prefer the traditional bus numbering system over the new reform by the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA).
The poll, conducted with 1,310 participants aged 15 and above from February 5-7, found 63.98% favored reverting to the long-standing bus numbers, such as Bus No. 150.
While 20.20% were fine with adding old numbers for clarity alongside new ones, only 8.48% approved of the newly introduced zone prefixes, and 7.34% abstained from commenting.
The BMTA reformed its bus numbering system in the previous year, dividing the city and surrounding areas into four zones to consolidate routes and limit duplications.
From January 5, the BMTA implemented zone prefixes to route numbers, despite protests from its union and the Rot Mae Thai (Thai buses) Facebook group, which argued that the complex new system would be difficult for older users to adapt to.
Following grievances, Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit directed a return to new route numbers, accompanied by traditional numbers in brackets.
Despite this change, the vast majority of respondents still found fault with the modification, with almost half (45.95%) admitting to never having used Bangkok’s bus services. Only 9.62% reported using the service regularly.
