The Food and Drug Administration has expedited the registration process for mpox diagnostic test kits due to increasing concerns about the viral infection's spread. The World Health Organization has declared the Clade 1b-type mpox strain a public health emergency, with over 15,600 global cases and 537 deaths. In Thailand, 142 cases of the new strain have been reported this year, prompting enhanced screening at major airports.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has moved swiftly to open registration for mpox diagnostic test kits to address rising concerns about the spread of the viral infection.
FDA Deputy Secretary-General Lertchai Lertwut announced on Thursday that the FDA is accelerating the registration process for manufacturers and importers to ensure timely availability and public health security.
Details about the FDA-approved kits are available at https://medical.fda.moph.go.th.
The initiative follows the World Health Organization's (WHO) recent declaration of the Clade 1b-type mpox strain as a 'public health emergency international concern,' with cases identified in over 10 African countries.
Dr. Darinda Rosa, acting director at the Office of Disease Prevention and Control 11 in Nakhon Si Thammarat, remarked that the new strain is more transmissible.
Globally, over 15,600 people have been diagnosed with this strain, resulting in 537 deaths.
In Thailand, 142 cases and three fatalities have been reported from January 1 to August 17.
Enhanced screening measures have been implemented at Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports, as well as Laem Chabang Port, especially for passengers arriving from Africa.
